Semantic grounding in models of analogy: an environmental approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Empirical studies indicate that analogy consists of two main processes: retrieval and mapping. While current theories and models of analogy have revealed much about the mainly structural constraints that govern the mapping process, the similarities that underpin the correspondences between individual representational elements and drive retrieval are understood in less detail. In existing models symbol similarities are externally defined but neither empirically grounded nor theoretically justified. This paper introduces a new model (EMMA: the environmental model of analogy) which relies on co-occurrence information provided by LSA (Latent Semantic Analysis; Landauer & Dumais, 1997) to ground the relations between the symbolic elements aligned in analogy. LSA calculates a contextual distribution for each word encountered in a corpus by counting the frequency with which it co-occurs with other words. This information is used to define a model that locates each word encountered in a high-dimensional space, with relations between elements in this space representing contextual similarities between words. A series of simulation experiments demonstrate that the environmental approach to semantics embodied in LSA can produce appropriate patterns of analogical retrieval, but that this semantic measure is not sufficient to model analogical mapping. The implications of these findings, both for theories of representation in analogy research and more general theories of semantics in cognition, are explored. © 2002 Cognitive Science Society, Inc. Developing a BIM-based Spatial Ontology for Semantic Querying of 3D Property Information
With the growing dominance of complex and multi-level urban structures, current cadastral systems, which are often developed based on 2D representations, are not capable of providing unambiguous spatial information about urban properties. Therefore, the concept of 3D cadastre is proposed to support 3D digital representation of land and properties and facilitate the communication of legal owners...

The analogy of Semantic Reference Systems proposed in (Kuhn in press) is being explored here with respect to the computational mechanisms it suggests. Semantic referencing, grounding in a semantic datum, semantic projection, and semantic transformation are defined and demonstrated through an implementation of a semantic reference system for a simple vehicle navigation model. The idea of wrappin...

In the past, grounding systems usually were modeled by an individual Resistor. This estimation is useful only at low frequencies, while in high frequencies, the inductance of the grounding system plays the main role to identify the phase and amplitude of that. In recent years, as wind farms grow rapidly throughout the world, the grounding system and ground impedance of wind turbine towers under...

This paper is treated with major risks applied by lightning strikes to wind farms. The risks illustrated in this research include overvoltage caused by direct and indirect effects of lightning strikes on any components of wind farm. As demands for electrical energy throughout our world is increased more and more nowadays, wind power plants are extended in every possible locations correspondingl...

Ontologies need to introduce some primitive symbols used for the definition of more complex ones. These primitive symbols have no formal definitions in the ontology, and as ontologies usually are incomplete axiomatizations, the semantics of the primitives remain ambiguous (Guarino 1998). This shifts the problem of semantic interoperability to the problem of how to ground such primitives. Ground...
